We make information
flow better.

Apario is a systems development and IT consultancy company. We build systems that make information more accessible, better organised, and easier to act on.

More than 25 years in, we specialise in solutions for organisations that need something beyond off-the-shelf — applying that thinking to everything from automated workflows to machine learning integration.

For the time being, we are selective about new projects, generally only taking on work we find particularly challenging or interesting as time allows. If you think you might have one, we'd love to hear from you.

Company history

Building systems since 1999.

A decade building the early web

1999Founded in Trondheim as a systems development company, also offering hosting, mail, and DNS services to businesses and organisations.
2000Released AMT — Apario Management Tools. An early system giving non-technical users direct control over their own web content and dynamic elements, before content management was a common concept.
2000Launched the Poster Paradise webshop, one of the earliest e-commerce sites in Norway, offering thousands of poster titles to dialup-era internet users.
2001–03Built multiple generations of gardsplassen.no, one of the leading agricultural news portals in the country. Introduced early automated integration of live weather forecast services into web platforms. Contributed patches upstream to eZ Publish under GPL. Started hosting major organisations and companies.
2002Released aqqrate, a web-based administration frontend for qmail mail servers, covering account management, autoresponders, group management, and other mail server extensions, giving administrators and users full control through a browser interface.
2002Released Dukeboccs, a web-based music and media player with public voting and intelligent playlist automation — an early example of web-controlled media automation. Rumour has it that somewhere there is still an installation running.
2002–03Developed Ogre, a proprietary web application framework providing multi-language support, session management, user administration, and a structured database layer. The foundation on which Ogrette, Poster Paradise, Planet Origo, and other large systems were later built.
2004–06Delivered what is believed to be the first direct SAP-to-eZ Publish integration for Felleskjøpet and FKTM.
2005Released Phunky, a centralised information distribution system capable of pushing content simultaneously to large displays, web, SMS, PA systems, and external alarm integrations. Designed for distributed publishing control across large organisations — industrial groups, business centres, festivals. Used at venues and events such as Studentersamfundet and The Gathering.
2006–07Designed and developed Planet Origo, an ambitious niche e-commerce and community platform for electronic music and science fiction/fantasy film. Built on the Ogre and Ogrette frameworks, it combined a full webshop, editorial newsroom, streaming radio, artist community system, warehouse management, and shipping and dropshipping handling — with personalised user experiences. A very technically complex project for the period.
2006–08Built energy monitoring and usage systems for resellers with industrial clients, delivering live data, automated reports, and alerts over internet connections — supporting APIs, mail, dial-up, and other protocols of the time.
2008–09Developed extensions for Doble Transinor's industrial embedded IPM measurement device, adding internet-based data centralisation and remote management capabilities. Developed and prototyped a proposed next-generation platform based on embedded, fortified Linux.
2008 onwardsWeb and mail infrastructure for large civic organisations. Continued platform and editorial systems work.
2009Reimplemented the Poster Paradise webshop on the Ogre/Ogrette framework, modernising a platform that had been running continuously since 2000.

After 2010

The main focus remained on using technology to improve and automate clients' existing workflows — with development shifting toward bespoke solutions for organisations that cannot use standard products. The company also moved increasingly toward consultancy and advisory roles, helping organisations understand their technical options, plan their systems architecture, and navigate challenges such as GDPR compliance. Throughout, Apario has maintained the in-house technical capability to actually build what is needed — we identify where technology can improve a workflow, and if no suitable solution exists, we write it.

Hosting services were consolidated, moving away from general ISP services toward specialised hosting for systems we build and maintain.

The size of the projects in question and the specialised nature of the work in this period makes it less suited to a public portfolio.

From the 2020s

The core focus remains — helping organisations get more out of their existing workflows through technology. Machine learning and LLM (AI) integration have become part of that toolkit, applied where they genuinely improve how a business operates. As with everything else we do, we use these methods ourselves before recommending them to others.

Our most ambitious project at the current time is a system framework specifically designed for building custom software for industries where off-the-shelf solutions simply do not work. Built to be extremely fast, lightweight, and flexible, it is designed to fit into existing operations without the overhead that comes with conventional enterprise solutions. The framework is real-time at its core, built for use on handheld devices in the field — giving workers immediate access to update and retrieve information, with instant visibility for central administration. Developed in close cooperation with small industry companies in Trondheim, the goal is a framework capable of serving a wide range of specialised industries on the same foundation.

Selected work

Work we're proud of.

Agricultural media & portals

Multiple generations of gardsplassen.no, one of the country's leading agricultural news portals, built in close collaboration with LIM. Also served Felleskjøpet and FKTM with enterprise data integrations and web platforms.

Entertainment & community

Poster Paradise — Norway's largest poster importer, with thousands of titles in their online webshop; we built and maintained their web presence from their first day online until the company ceased operations. Dukeboccs — a web-based music player and voting system, used at events and gatherings across the country. Planet Origo — a full-scale e-commerce, editorial, and artist community platform for electronic music and science fiction/fantasy film.

Science & culture

Web systems for Forskningstorget, Norway's annual science festival, and community and information systems for Studentersamfundet in Trondheim.

Civic & membership organisations

Nei til EU and Norges speiderforbund (NSF) — two of Norway's largest membership organisations — are long-standing clients. We handle hosting and infrastructure, and have delivered systems development for both over the years. We also delivered custom systems development for Grønn Hverdag during their years of operation.

Industrial systems

Energy monitoring and usage systems for industrial clients, delivering live data, automated reports, and alerts across internet connections at a time when connecting industrial systems to the internet was far from standard practice — requiring custom solutions for communicating over APIs, mail, dial-up, and other available protocols. Also delivered embedded systems development for Doble Transinor's IPM measurement devices, including internet-based data centralisation and remote management.

Workflow automation & specialised development

Working with small industrial and agricultural businesses to identify where technology can streamline their operations — and building the tools to make it happen when nothing suitable exists off the shelf.
